Those looking forward to either game will need to stay patient as we approach the new, more nebulous ‘first half of 2023’ release date for Starfield and Redfall. The story of vampire shooter Redfall is less clear, given it hasn’t been spoken about much, but there’s still high anticipation for the upcoming title. That’s an extremely lofty goal – and one that likely inspired the decision to delay the title. In early 2022, CEO of Microsoft Gaming, Phil Spencer, claimed the team wanted to make Starfield the ‘most-played’ Todd Howard game, with plans for it to eclipse Skyrim, one of the most popular games of all time. Whether these extra few months will be enough to allay the reported fears of developers is currently unknown. The delay appears to align with these allegations, and may demonstrate that Bethesda is attempting a more cautious approach to development on the game. According to Schreier, the term ‘Next Cyberpunk‘ was floated for the game – with developers afraid they could be launching the latest buggy, ridiculed gaming disaster. Read: Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase announced for Juneįollowing the announcement, games journalist Jason Schreier alleged several developers who worked on Starfield were worried about the previous November 2022 release date for the game. That said, with Xbox and Bethesda cooking up an E3-style showcase in June, we could see more from both titles soon, regardless of the newly revealed delay. It appears the games need a bit more work before they’re ready to be shown off to the public. This led to much speculation about both titles – speculation that is now confirmed by Bethesda’s announcement on Twitter. While Starfield had been getting regular updates from Bethesda, many of them have been focussed on concept art and the game’s philosophy, rather than actual gameplay. and I rarely use it.Neither Redfall nor Starfield had been given meaty trailers in the last few months, with Redfall essentially disappearing after its initial launch announcement. I'm not bullshitting when I say that the thing is attached to a huge TV in my living room with a GPU sub on it. There *still* hasn't been anything singleplayer Xbox exclusive that stands out. I'm in the same boat, but I got an XSX at launch. Xbox has zero credibility at this point when it come to their AAA release calendar. Point is, it's hard not to be frustrated, and Phil is right to be upset. Do you want access to a bunch of pretty good games? Great! The amazing ones? Yeah those are. But if those amazing upcoming AAA games never release, or they release unfinished (Halo). that then get delayed repeatedly.Īt the moment it's 'lots of good games on gamepass + the promise of upcoming amazing AAA games' that keeps me subbed. Or even worse, continually selling the promise of upcoming quality releases. I know Microsoft has invested a ton in studios, but I'm getting distinctly Netflix vibes at this point. Dusted off the rarely used X1 and had a blast. It was a killer singleplayer exclusive, I was all over it. This was not the case when Cuphead initially released on X1 for example. I think I remember CDPR getting flack for basically just having a super long crunch period.Ĭlick to shrink. It's entirely valid to feel that way. The best thing is if they announce the delay early enough to let game creators stagger their vacation time around the final crunch. I'm probably forgetting a hundred others but yeah, it's probably more impressive if a game actually comes out within 3 months of its originally planned release date. Saints Row: Delayed from February 2022 to August 2022.Gotham Knights: Delayed from sometime in 2021 to sometime in 2022.BOTW 2: Delayed from holiday 2022 to Spring 2023.S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2: Delayed from April 2022 to holiday 2022.God of War Ragnarok: I think almost a one-year delay? Holiday 2021 to somewhere in the second half of 2022.GT7: Few months delay from holiday 2021 to March 2022.Horizon Forbidden West: Few months delay from holiday 2021 to February 2022.R&C Rift Apart: I think there was speculation about it being a launch window release but it looks like they waited until they were sure before announcing the summer 2021 release date.Returnal: Small one-month delay from March to April of 2021.Halo Infinite: A full year delay and still some features haven't been rolled out yet like co-op and Forge.Cyberpunk: Delayed from April 2020 to November uld definitely argue that it should have been delayed more.Doom Eternal: Delayed from holiday 2019 to March 2020.Now that I think about it, it feels like most AAA games have gotten delayed in the last couple of years.
